Authorized Vehicle and People Crossing
There are many existing border crossings between the U.S.A. and Mexico, and many of these are for both vehicles and people. In high trucking areas there are separate border crossings just for commercial trucking; and in some areas there are railway crossings. Each of these crossings require Border Patrol Agents from both nations.
Existing vehicle crossings were created years ago and are not optimized for all possible means of smuggling items, drugs, guns, or people. We have the technology to weigh vehicles and people on scales and compare the weight to a database, to which end we can tell if a vehicle and its passengers are copasetic or not. We have the use of hand-held mirrors for looking under a vehicle, but have not set-up camera and mirrors in the roadway that can easily detect items strapped to the chassis.
People at the border crossings frequently have to wait in long lines as each person's ID is checked. There may be lines for Americans returning to the U.S.A. or Mexicans entering the U.S.A. to shop or work each day. These lines are a pain, each is a security risk, and each mixes easy ID checks with difficult ID checks. The BorderTransportationSystem design is to secure these lines and make passage easier and faster by having metal detectors far back from the checkpoint entry area, and having different lines for different IDs. By using Biometrics one should be able to walk to a camera with one's ID held under the chin, and the system should be able to check both the ID and the facial metrics.
Those that cross the border daily or frequently would have a pre-approved ID that is registered in the computer systems, and therefore only need to walk to the camera and then proceed. To add more security against someone carrying a strapped on bomb or a belt full of illegal drugs, there can be a scale in the floor which will weigh that person, and check the weight to database that has his or her weight recorded from other crossing.
