Desalination Plant Sizing

Each of the Stations / Rest Areas along the BorderTransportationSystem will need some water and the volume of water in Gallons per Day will vary not only on the use and location of the station, but also by the time of day.  Between the hours of midnight and six AM the primary use of the system will be to transport freight; during the hours of six AM to 9 AM, and 5 PM to 9 PM the use will probably be business and tourist types.  The remainder of the daylight hours will be a mix of passenger and freight use.

It is estimated that there should be some 2,000,000 passengers per year for the first few years and that figure will go up as the system becomes better known to the public.  This estimate is an educated guess from looking at the current air, rail, and vehicle traffic along the I-10, Amtrak, and airlines that currently move people thru the four states.

A person living at home will use approximately 20 to 25 gallons of water per day, while traveling for a hour or two, or even all day this will drop to about 5 or 6 gallons per day as laundry, bathing, and toilet use will be curtailed.  Thus, the system will need to supply approximately 35,000 gallon of water per day for the estimated daily passenger use.  This works out at about 1,000 gallons per station per day.

The BorderTransportationSystem will be pulling clients from the airports and airlines that are along the system's route.  More data is needed on this, but the following will provide a starting point for determining high-speed vehicle and rail traffic as people switch from air travel to alternative travel.

The current Interstate system was built years ago, and many sections are now being rebuilt at a cost to the taxpayers.  Interstate I-10 is one such highway that stretches across several states; the BorderTransportationSystem can replace much of this and boost the speed from 75 MPH to over 140 MPH, and if using the high-speed rail, to nearly 250 MPH.

Rail traffic will be the major volume of traffic on the BorderTransportationSystem, and as such there will have to be an engineering and R&D movement to cover and convert the existing rolling stock to that which can be self-propelled and travel at 250 MPH or more.
